Copenhagen Opens Local Sports Programs: Join Athletics, Baseball, Street Sports
City-run trials and youth clubs provide straightforward routes into athletics, baseball and street sports ahead of the September championships.
How we reported this
Copenhagen will host the World Athletics Road Running Championships Copenhagen 26 on September 19-20 2026, with events covering the 5 km, One Mile and Half Marathon distances for both elite and open youth categories.
The upcoming event has drawn attention to existing entry points for children and families who want to begin organised sport in the city. Three out of four Danish children already take part in regular physical activity, and programmes tied to the championships give newcomers direct access to coached sessions without prior experience.
Free trials at city sports halls
The City of Copenhagen has opened 11 sports halls for children to sample new activities at no cost through the initiative titled 'What do you want to do?, Try a sport', run in partnership with local clubs. Residents can arrive at any participating hall on scheduled weekends and rotate through short introductory sessions led by club coaches.
Baseball sessions for players aged 8-15 operate at Valby Idrætspark, where a junior programme teaches basic fielding, throwing and team play. The same venue has already seen nearly 200 Copenhagen schoolchildren qualify for spots linked to the World Championship programme.
Street sports at GAME Copenhagen
GAME Copenhagen runs an indoor asphalt facility in the city centre that supports youth-led street sports, dance and mixed-group activities. The centre welcomes participants from varied backgrounds and requires only basic sportswear and a completed registration form on arrival.
Those who begin through the free hall trials or the GAME facility can progress to club teams that feed into the September road-running events. No equipment purchase is needed for the initial sessions, and coaches present at each location supply details on follow-up training times and age-group placements.
