On any given morning, the outdoor gym at Superkilen in Nørrebro is packed with cyclists, joggers and parents pushing prams. By 8am, all six pull-up bars are taken. The park's bright red, green and black zones, designed by artist collective Superflex, draw more than 2,000 daily visitors in summer-many of them to train for free.
Copenhagen’s network of outdoor fitness stations has quietly become one of the city’s most used public amenities. The City of Copenhagen maintains 22 official outdoor gym circuits across 18 parks, according to the municipality’s 2025 annual sport report. That is up from 15 in 2022. The shift reflects a broader European trend: Oslo added 12 outdoor gyms since 2023, and Berlin’s Bezirksamt Mitte installed four new calisthenics parks last year alone.
Why does this matter now? Because the cost of indoor fitness memberships in Copenhagen has risen 18 percent since 2020, according to data from Danmarks Statistik. A basic monthly plan at a chain like Fitness World or PureGym now runs between 299 and 399 kroner. For many residents, especially students and young families, free outdoor equipment has become an essential alternative. Meanwhile, the Danish Health Authority recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week-something these parks make possible without spending a krone.
The most comprehensive free outdoor gym is at Superkilen, located between Mimersgade and Norrebrogade. The red section features parallel bars, pull-up rigs and a climbing wall that doubles as a bench. The equipment is heavy-gauge steel, installed in 2012 and refurbished in 2024. A second station at the green zone offers resistance bands and a step platform. The park is open 24 hours and lit until midnight from April through October.
At Amager Strandpark, just off Amager Strandvej near the beach promenade, an outdoor fitness circuit runs for 1.2 kilometres along the water. The course has 12 stations, including a chest press, leg press and a dip station. This is the only free outdoor gym in Copenhagen with wheelchair-accessible equipment, installed in 2022 as part of the city's accessibility plan. The circuit is busiest on weekends; arrive before 9am if you want a clear run.
Islands Brygge Harbour Bath, while famous for swimming, also has a small free fitness area on the eastern side of the pier. Three pull-up bars, a set of rings and a padded platform for bodyweight exercises sit next to the wooden decking. It is less equipped than Superkilen but offers something unique: users can combine strength sets with a plunge into the harbour. The water temperature in July is around 18°C-cold enough to shock, but increasingly popular among Copenhageners who follow the Wim Hof method.
All outdoor gyms in Copenhagen are part of the city’s 'Park Fitness' program, managed by the Culture and Leisure Department. Equipment is inspected quarterly, according to a 2025 tender document from the municipality. The city spent 1.2 million kroner on maintenance in 2024, up from 800,000 kroner in 2021. Users are asked to wipe down equipment after use-sanitising wipes are provided at Superkilen and Amager Strand-but many bring their own towel.
What happens next? The City of Copenhagen announced in June 2026 that two more outdoor gyms will open before next summer: one in Fælledparken near the Østerbro side, and one in Valby Parken close to the café pavilion. The total budget for the expansion is 850,000 kroner. For anyone looking to build a routine without a monthly bill, the best advice is to pick a station close to home-consistency matters more than equipment count. And a local physiotherapist, should you need one, can help design a circuit tailored to your goals.
